Best Known for its sandy beaches and resorts in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan literally means 'nine states'. The state is known for its recreational forests, waterfalls, beaches and rapids that offer opportunities for kayaking, camping, jungle trekking, fishing and hill climbing for the adventurous one.
Besides having fun in the sun and getting in touch with nature, you can also soak in the state's captivating history and customs. The state is heavily influenced by Minangkabau culture brought centuries ago from Sumatera. The influence can be seen today in the upswept roofs, shaped like buffalo horns on traditional houses and modern state buildings. The food is also very rich and spicy, and the dialect is thick with Minang, which is spoken by people across the straits.
Seremban, the state capital that was once known as Sungai Ujung, is a busy town thriving with activities. Here, you can visit the Seremban Lake Gardens. It is so beautiful park in the heart of the town surrounded by interesting buildings like the State Assembly, the State Mosque, the State Library and Istana Hinggap ( the city palace of the State's Ruler). The State Cultural Complex, located near the second exit from the North-South Expressway to Seremban, stands out among the Minangkabau architectures in Seremban.
Another architectural wonder is the Seri Menanti Royal Museum. This former palace was built without a single nail! It was put together using only wood pegs. Built in 1908, based on traditional concepts then used in Minagkabau, its remains sturdy until today. The palace is now a Royal Museum and is open to the public.
Pedas Wet World Resort, which is a water theme park, is popular for its hot spring. The streaming hot water is believed to have medicinal properties. The resort also has various recreational facilities such as a water playground and a man-made pool for children and adults.
Nature lovers can explore the Gunung Angsi Forest Reserve on the border between Kuala Pilah and Seremban districts. It is just 16 km from Sremban on the main road to Kuala Pilah and offers trekking, jungle excursions, camping and picnics.
The De Bana Recreational Forest located in the Pasoh Forest Reserve in Jempol is named after a river, which flows through it. The forest has a valuable herbs such as Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah, which are claimed to have aphrodisiac value.
The more adventurous can choose to shoot the Toi Rapids, that flows swiftly down seven waterfalls. Name after Tok Batin Toi, a headman of the Orang Asli community who used to live in the forest here, this place is also a favourite among day-trippers.
