Perlis may be the smallest state in Malaysia, but its quaint unspoilt beauty and old rustic charms are mesmerising. Rich with picturesque scenery and centuries-old traditions, it is and ideal place away from the hum drum of city life.
The state is situated between Thailand in the north and Kedah in the south and lapped by the gentle waters of the Straits of Melaka on its western coastline. Expansive green paddy fileds broken occassionally by limestone mounds and the laid-back rural lifestyel make your journey a refreshing and memorable one.
The capitol of the state, Kangar, is a small town with everything within walking distance. A short distance north of Kangar is the Tasik Melati, a shallow and placid lake that offers a respite for boating, picnics or good evening walk.
Surrounded by the Bukit Bintang Forest Reserve near Sungai Batu Pahat, 10km north of Kangar, is the Snake and Reptile Farm. The Snake Farm is a research facilitiy set up to develop antivenins for snakebite. Housing more than 20 species of snakes as well as crocodile and monitor lizards, it is the only snake farm in Malaysia.
A little north to the Snake Farm is the 12ha Herbs Garden. The garden contains over 6,000 species of herbs, spices and traditional medicinal plants. Both local and exotic species from other countries are grown and visitors to the gardens can learn their uses and how to care for such plants.
If you wish for a little adventure, head on to Gua Kelam or Dark Cave, a 370m long cave passage near the town of Kaki Bukit. The wooden walkaway built along the passageway is well-lit for visitors to admire the 'architectural' wonders created by nature. The cave is believed to have been hollowed out from the limestone massif by an underground stream over thousands of years.
Padang Besar is a bustling border town, and a major stopover along the rail route between Singapore, and Thailand. The extended railway station is manned by officials at one end and their Thai counterparts at the other.
The town is haven for bargain hunters' and has several duty-free shops and a variety of produce, souvenirs, and artefacts that bear testimony to the rich cultural legacy of the state.

'Laksa Perlis', is a homemade noodle soup with thick, rich, spicy and creamy fish gravy. This is one dish that cannot be missed.
Your choice of eating places range from hawkers centres to air-conditioned restaurants. Price are very reasonable and the service is friendly and courteous. Another alternative is the food sold at the local Pasar Malam or Night Market. The Night Market offers a fiesta-like atmosphere and business is usually brisk as early as five oçlock in the evening.
